On March 31, 2026, CERRA-AFRICA achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of its Research Modules during a well-attended and interactive webinar. The event brought together religious sisters and key stakeholders from across the region, all united by a shared commitment to strengthening research capacity within the Church in Africa.
With over 90 participants, the webinar featured an impressive turnout. Religious sisters from various congregations actively engaged throughout the session, displaying enthusiasm and a keen interest in integrating research into their ministries.
A standout feature of the webinar was the series of insightful presentations delivered by distinguished speakers. These sessions highlighted the role of applied research within the Church and contemporary society. Participants were encouraged to move beyond general ideas and embrace research as a tool for understanding real-life situations, such as demographics, ministries, and the needs within their congregations.
The significance of capacity building in applied research was strongly emphasized. Speakers pointed out that applied research is practical and solution-oriented, designed not just for academic purposes but for everyday use in planning and responding to challenges. Examples shared during the session illustrated how research initiatives, such as developing databases for women religious, can help identify trends, improve training, and showcase the significant contributions of sisters to both the Church and society.
Another important aspect explored during the webinar was the spiritual and theological foundation of research. Participants were reminded that research is not merely a technical activity, but a process deeply rooted in listening, discernment, and mission. It enables the Church to interpret the “signs of the times,” listen to the lived experiences of people, especially those on the margins, and respond with compassion and relevance. In this way, research becomes an essential instrument for promoting justice, human dignity, and faithful action in ministry.
The level of participant engagement was particularly noteworthy. Attendees actively contributed by asking questions and reflecting on how they could incorporate research into their own contexts.
The launch of the Research Modules represents an important advancement for CERRA-AFRICA in its mission to empower religious sisters across Africa. By equipping them with practical research skills, for enhancing their ability to respond effectively to contemporary challenges and serve their communities with greater insight and impact.
One of the key messages from the webinar beautifully captured this sentiment: “Research is how the Church listens before it speaks, understands before it acts, and serves where it is truly needed.”
